The Arctic Monkeys at Hammerstein Ballroom

To say that people like the Arctic Monkeys would be a severe understatement…

People FUCKING LOVE the Arctic Monkeys.  Ok, so I knew that they were huge in the UK, and I knew that they sold out Hammerstein Ballroom like it was nothing.  But I definitely didn’t understand the full extent of their allure until the lights went down to signal the start of their show last night…

It quickly turned into the kind of show that I love going to.  When I peered down from my comfortably removed “jaded music industry” seats in the Mezz1, I saw the sea of bodies bouncing up and down and singing every word; fists pounding, and crowd surfing.

There are bands that get their audience to bob their head and tap their feet; and then there are the Arctic Monkeys- wordlessly coercing their fans into a frenzy.  Now that’s the way a rock show should be.

They sailed through a powerful 50 minute set, occasionally plagued by some nasty feed back, but hey, we can’t all be perfect.  Their music is not fluid, and their live show is no exception.  The intentionally jerky nature of their music can be a little harsh at first, if you were one of the few people at the show who was not a super fan.  But the energy in that room was so intense that it didn’t seem to matter.

Shout out to their #1 fan rocking out on Mezz1, I was glad to see you didn’t fall over the ledge….for those of you who loved The Jam

I was watching the dude in the yellow shirt all night if that’s who you’re referring to as “#1 fan rocking out on Mezz1″. I was also in Mezz1 and couldn’t take my eyes off of him. That was the most intense air drums and air guitar I’ve ever seen. He’s my new hero. Great review!
